Bayer MaterialScience stated that the company plans to close its MDI plant near Rio de Janeiro in July 2015. At that time, the company's MDI on the market will be reduced by 55,000 tons per year.
In addition, a polyether polyol plant with an annual output of about 15,000 tons and a small paint raw material production plant will also be shut down.
Bayer added that, according to internal analysis, the production cost of these products at Belfrosch is particularly expensive compared to other sites.
Factory parking will affect the employment of approximately 320 employees. Bayer MaterialScience is currently cooperating with Bayer Crop Science and Bayer Healthcare to transfer as many employees as possible to other departments. Bayer MaterialScience said the company is in contact with the local labor committee and labor union to provide severance pay for the remaining employees.
